Infidelity and Porn-Sex addiction

For individuals and partners

AASAT (American association of sex addiction therapy)

Dr Fai is one of the few pornography and sexual addiction therapist in Queensland, who has the expertise and credentials in dealing with an individual’s pornography and sexual addiction, as well as their partners.

The discovery of sex addiction, porn addiction or infidelity in a committed relationship are devastating.  It can be a massive shock for the hurt partner who very was unaware of what their partner was doing.  The addicted partner (sex addict) / infidel can be overwhelmed with fear and shame that their hidden sexual behaviour has been discovered.  The couple will have a hundred questions on what to do next and if their relationship can survive the pain and trauma of betrayal.

Porn addiction is a type of sex addiction but sometimes has very different roots to other forms of sex addiction – especially for younger people who have grown up with easy access to Internet porn.

Many people are unaware of their dependency on porn until it escalates to the point of impacting other areas of life and relationships, friendships, education or work. Or when they no longer are able to get an erection without using pornography and sex with a partner no longer holds any appeal. For some people the escalation turns  into cybersex, hook ups and visiting sex workers.

What Are the Different Types of Sexual Addictions?

There are no distinct categories, but sexual addictions can come in different forms, including addiction to:

  • Pornography.
  • Prostitution.
  • Masturbation or fantasy.
  • Sadistic or masochistic behaviour.
  • Exhibition/Voyeurism.
  • Other excessive sexual pursuits.

Sex addiction is present when

  • You feel powerless over how you act sexually.
  • Your sexual choices are making your life unmanageable.
  • You feel shame, embarrassment or even self-loathing over your sexual acts.
  • You promise yourself you’ll change, but fail to keep those promises.
  • You’re so preoccupied with sex it becomes like a ritual to you.

Partners’ trauma

Trauma or PTSD can be caused by a partner’s infidelity/betrayal to their significant other. This is a real trauma and have severe negative consequences the betrayed partner’s life as well as destruction of trust. This type of trauma can have physical, psychological and relational consequences for the hurt partner and manifest in different ways.
